Bicycles for the future

Project duration: 4 years (2022–2025)
Country: Uganda (West Nile Region: Adjumani, Lambwo, Arua Districts)
Partner organization: Women Coalition for Empowerment Eastern Africa WCEEA, Kenya

Almost one million refugees from Somalia live in Uganda today, most of whom have come no farther than the refugee camps where they experience extreme poverty and have virtually no perspective.

The project to empower women refugees from Southern Sudan is aimed at supporting and training a total of 100 women – 40 of whom are very young – in three selected settlements in the West Nile Region. The women chosen for the training are especially disadvantaged, for many have to provide for an entire family. The project includes courses in business management, agribusiness or mechanical skills. As a special training area, several groups of women are taught to work as bicycle mechanics and saleswomen. Moreover, the program also provides them with information on refugees’ socio-economic rights, on gender-specific violence and options to protect them-selves.
To lay a foundation for their business, these women are given robust bicycles that open up numerous ways for them to generate an income, e. g. by transporting goods to market.

The Women Coalition for Empowerment Eastern Africa WCEEA is a feminist women’s organization that has been advocating for equality and women’s rights in Eastern Africa since 2015.
