To live with dignity
Project duration: 5 years (2021–2026)
Country: Nepal (Nawalpur and Lalitpur)
Partner organization: Nagarik Aawaz (Citizen’s Voice), Nepal
In every war, women are victims of violence. This was also the case during the civil war in Nepal. It has left women in its wake who remain trapped in their trauma and involuntarily pass it on to their children. Nagarik Aawaz’s project “Women living with dignity” aims at breaching these women’s hopeless situation and giving them a voice.
30 women who have been victims of violence are trained to become peace builders: 15 each in the districts of Nawalpur and Lalitpur. They receive psychological and/or medical support to help them speak about their traumatic experiences. They are offered “safe spaces” where they can exchange ideas with other victims.
The second stage of the project focuses on the peace builders’ personal education on themes such as conflict, gender-specific violence, leadership, and peace building.
They then share their newly acquired knowledge with other women of their community. Fi-nally, the peace builders will enter into a dialogue with the public and with schools in order to bring about a mind shift in society.
Another 20 women were admitted to the project in 2022. Moreover, Nagarik Aawaz also supports a newly created self-help group of affected women.
Nagarik Aawaz has been doing peace work and conflict management for more than 20 years.
